Age and payment guidance

Under 16 – you need a parent, guardian, or responsible adult to register you, pay for your place, and join in with you.

16+ – you can register yourself, pay for your own place, and take part on your own.

Safety

We want everyone to enjoy the Walking Scotland Step Count Challenge. Please follow activity guidelines for your age, and if you have health concerns, speak to a healthcare professional before starting.

Data protection and communications

Walking Scotland is registered with the Information Commission (ICO) as Paths For All, registration number Z3426840.

By participating in the Walking Scotland Step Count Challenge, you agree to receive challenge-related emails, which may include:

  • welcome and set-up information
  • performance updates and recognition, and step logging reminders
  • tips, tools, and inspiration, and weekly mini competitions
  • challenge-related advice or support

These emails are sent under the legitimate interests lawful basis (i.e. they are necessary to manage and support your participation) and a Legitimate Interest Assessment (LIA) has been completed to ensure fair and proportionate processing in line with UK GDPR and the Fundraising Regulator’s Code. You can withdraw from these emails at any time by clicking ‘Unsubscribe’ at the bottom of any email.

Website use

This website is for your personal, lawful use only. By accessing it, you accept these Terms and Conditions, which may be updated from time to time.

Our website uses small tokens, called Cookies, to support access and use to our website. You may change your Cookie settings at any time, but essential Cookies cannot be disabled.

All content, names, images, and logos relating to the Step Count Challenge and Walking Scotland are protected by copyright and trademark law. You may not copy or use them without prior written permission.

Governing law

These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of Scotland.

Invoice policy

Our new invoice policy applies to all Step Count Challenge invoice purchases made on or after 16/09/2025. Invoice purchases made before this date will be managed in line with the terms available at the time of sign-up.

National challenge invoicing

  • National challenge purchases of 10 or more teams may be paid by invoice. This can be requested via the Step Count Challenge website.
  • Invoices for purchases are issued on receipt of an invoice request made through the website.
  • Invoice payment terms for purchases are 30 days.
  • To purchase extra teams for a national challenge, it is necessary to make an additional purchase for the required number of extra teams. This can be done via the Step Count Challenge website.
  • Additional purchases of 10 or more teams may be paid by invoice. This can be requested via the Step Count Challenge website.
  • Invoices for additional purchases are issued on receipt of an invoice request made through the website.
  • Invoice payment terms for additional purchases are 30 days.
  • Additional purchases of fewer than 10 teams must be made at the point of purchase by card on the Step Count Challenge website.
  • For any unused teams, please see Refund, cancellation and transfer policy.

Bespoke challenge invoicing

  • Bespoke challenge enquiries may be made via scc@walkingscotland.org.uk.
  • Bespoke challenge purchases may be paid by card or invoice.
  • Card payment instructions or invoices for purchases are issued on receipt of a completed bespoke challenge booking form.
  • Card and invoice payment terms for purchases are 30 days.
  • To purchase extra teams for a bespoke challenge, it is necessary to make an additional purchase for the required number of extra teams. This can be requested via scc@walkingscotland.org.uk.
  • Additional purchases may be paid by card or invoice.
  • Card payment instructions or invoices for additional purchases are issued on receipt of an additional purchase request made by email.
  • Card and invoice payment terms for additional purchases are 30 days.

Refund, cancellation and transfer policy

Our new refund and cancellation policy applies to all Step Count Challenge purchases made on or after 06/09/2025. Purchases made before this date will be managed in line with the terms available at the time of sign-up.

Registration fees

  • All registration fees for the Step Count Challenge (national and bespoke challenges) are non-refundable once payment has been received.
  • This applies whether or not a participant or team chooses to, or is able to, complete the challenge.

Organiser cancellation

  • If Walking Scotland cancels a Step Count Challenge for reasons within our control (e.g. insufficient registrations or internal resourcing issues), participants will be offered a deferral/credit towards the next available Step Count Challenge within 12 months.
  • If a Step Count Challenge is cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control (force majeure), including but not limited to extreme weather, strikes, or public health restrictions, no refunds will be issued. Participants will be offered a deferral/credit to the next available Step Count Challenge within 12 months.

Unused team entries

If multiple team entries are purchased and not all are used during a challenge:

  • up to 50% of unused team entries may be carried forward once to a future Step Count Challenge
  • the maximum carry-over per purchase is 20 team entries, regardless of the total number purchased
  • any unused team entries beyond the percentage limit or maximum cap will be forfeited
  • a carry-over request must be made within 30 days of the challenge end date
  • carried-over team entries may be used for a national or a bespoke Step Count Challenge
  • carried-over team entries must be used within 12 months of the original challenge start date
  • any carried-over team entries not used within the 12-month timeframe will be forfeited
  • at least one team may always be carried forward if the purchaser has at least one unused team entry.

Transfers and substitutions

  • If an individual participant cannot take part in a challenge, their place may be transferred to a colleague or substitute at no additional cost, provided this is arranged before the challenge start date.
  • Place transfers are not permitted once the challenge has begun.

Administrative fees

  • Any booking, processing, or administration fees are non-refundable under all circumstances.

Policy updates

  • Walking Scotland reserves the right to update or amend this policy at any time. The version published on our website at the time of registration will apply.
